Dean's Message

Dear Students

What makes a faculty valuable is its history, origin, and traditions. There is no doubt that one
cannot become a faculty by building a building. Istanbul University Faculty of Law is the
oldest and most traditional law faculty in our country, and is proud of it. Our faculty has a
unique higher education tradition. No other law faculty in the county can reach this position.
Istanbul University Faculty of Law is institutionalised, serious, and has scientific
independence. In our faculty, the rules do not change according to individuals or
circumstances. All decisions are taken within the framework of higher education legislation.
Our faculty does not give up this seriousness and stance, regardless of the circumstances. In
this direction, it never compromises its scientific autonomy.
The main purpose of our faculty is to meet the need for competent lawyers in our country. All
courses and administrative management are carried out within this understanding. Our
commitment; Instead of an “ordinary” higher education, it is a “qualified” education that
prepares our students for life and a very valuable diploma whose value is better understood
after graduation. This diploma will bring you to the forefront in all areas of life. You can be
sure that our faculty does not educate students who are rote memorisers, who lack scientific
enthusiasm, and who do not question; but knowledgeable, well-equipped, competent, and
enlightened lawyers.
Istanbul University Faculty of Law has been a pioneer in every field of law. It has the largest
academic staff among the law faculties in our country. Our faculty is located under the roof of
a research university. In this meaning, having a large and highly qualified academic staff, it is
a pioneer in the field of “research” as well as “teaching law” and continues to increase this
quality every day. In order to understand this, it is sufficient to take a look at the Turkish legal
literature, to examine how many of the master's and doctoral studies in our country are carried
out in which faculty and under the supervision of which professors, and how many academics
in other faculties are from our Faculty or were trained in our Faculty. In our recent and distant
history, there is not a single constitutional preparation or legislative work in which the

academics of our Faculty did not play a role. Further, the judge currently serving on behalf of
Turkey at the European Court of Human Rights is a member of the Constitutional Law
Department of our Faculty.
The library of our faculty is the largest and richest law faculty library in Turkey. With
this quality, it is open not only to its own students, but also to students and academicians of all
other faculties who want to do research, graduate and doctoral studies in the field of law.
Our faculty is the most recognized law faculty of our country in the international area.
It has academic cooperation agreements with many universities abroad, Erasmus program and
many similar joint ventures. Our faculty regularly participates in international moot court
competitions such as “Moot Court” and national arbitration competitions and achieves
outstanding success.
What’s more, within the framework of the agreement signed between Hamburg
University Faculty of Law, one of the leading law faculties in Germany, and our Faculty, there
is an international undergraduate program that offers double diploma opportunities as of the
2019-2020 academic year. This program constitutes a very important step in the international
vision of our Faculty.
All lecture halls and administrative units are located in the Beyazıt campus of Istanbul
University, which is an oasis in the middle of the historical peninsula, very central but far
from the noise of the city. This historic building hosts many national and international
symposiums and conferences. The facilities we offer to our animal friends together with all
our students, which immediately catches the eye when entering the campus, also reveals the
sensitivity of our University on this issue. Our Faculty, which enables many different and
valuable activities of many student clubs, is also the owner of the orange flag symbolizing
“accessibility in space”, green flag symbolizing "accessibility in education" and blue flag
symbolizing "accessibility in sociocultural activities" given by the Council of Higher
Education.
We hold the responsibility that comes with the quality of “pioneering”. We are
determined to maintain the quality of our Faculty as a “home of science and the center of legal
science”. All students have the opportunity to reach the Dean directly and within a very short
time for any problems related to the Faculty.

Istanbul University Faculty of Law will be your lifelong reference.
